| Resumo | Using ten years of data at 700, 500, and 200 mb levels, in the region between 48 graus N, 48 S, 20 graus W - 70 graus W, a diagnostic study was performed in order to understand the mechanisms of lateral (latitudinal)forcings due to extra-tropical synoptic systems which are associated with rainfall anomalies (droughts and floods)over Northeast Brazil. It is found that at 700 mb the northeast flow towards Northeast Brazil is weaker (stronger)during a relatively dry (wet)year, in agreement with the works of Namias (1972)and Hastenrath and Heller (1977). The deviations of latitudinal fluxes of momentum (...)and potential energy (...)indicate that the latitudinal exchange of these quantities is mainly in the region 20 graus W to 50 graus W, during very wet years over Northeast Brazil. With these results, the critical latitude was determined and a non-linear, numerical model was developed to simulate the coupling between the extra-tropical systems and the tropical flow. Latitudinal forcings, corresponding to a typical case of a very dry (wet)year, show the establishement of an alternating pattern of relatively descending (ascending)motions over the region under study. |
